What is it?

March 9th, 2008

What is it that people want?

It is clearly impossible to answer this question, as there are probably as many answers as there are people in this world.

Or maybe nobody really knows what it is they want. Maybe we’re all just living our lives on an inertia that springs from our “survival instinct”, with no real purpose.

It takes a lot of courage to be “genuine”. It takes a lot of courage to do what you really want to do. And it takes a lot of courage to dive into it, when you finally get your chance.

Life is pretty straightforward, and yet everything feels complicated.

It’s the irony of human existence..

Meraviglioso.. [Italian]

Cosi` meraviglioso e` lo sguardo di una donna
quando il suo cuore palpita di desiderio
Gli occhi aperti, spalancati, profondi,
rivelano la sua fragilita` e la sua passione
Il petto freme d’amore davanti a
quel viso cosi` determinato e serio,
dove la dolcezza della bambina e l’ardore della donna
si incontrano.

Labbra cosi` dolci, cosi` soffici, cosi` perfette..
Sospiri carezzano i volti contratti dalla serenita` del desiderio.

Il tempo si ferma davanti al buio lucente di quei pozzi oscuri

Screenwriters Crysis in Hollywood?

July 19th, 2007

I can’t help but notice that many of this and last year’s movies don’t have an original subject.

I find remarkable the fact that most screenplays nowadays are just transpositions of pre-existing stories.

We are being bombarded with comic-book heroes and stories: Spider Man [1, 2, 3], The Fantastic Four [1, 2], Batman Begins, X-Men [1, 2, 3], Hulk, 300, V for Vendetta, Superman Returns, & more..

There are the movies based on books: The Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter [1, 2, 3, 4, 5.. so far], Eragon, Zodiac, Flags of Our Fathers, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings [1, 2, 3]

And then, the infamous remakes: I Am Legend, The Hitcher, The Departed, Gridiron Gang, & more..

It is often said that good screenwriters are very hard to find, and that is why some of them get paid even more than the directors themselves.

Still, I sincerely do hope that someone can come up with new, original, and never-before-seen ideas for movies in the close future. And I hope the comic book thing will be short-lived (although the numbers those kinda movies pull in at the box office give me little hope).

Anyhow, I am currently reading a few good books on creative writing. I will dedicate a whole post to the subject myself, if you so fancy.

See you then!

Touch-typing. Back to the drawing board.

June 6th, 2007

I was a pretty fast typist. And by pretty fast, I mean I could type probably somewhere around 80-100 words per minute.

I had noticed, though, that my speed hadn’t variated in years.

I did not use to hunt and peck, of course: I looked at the screen, and I would basically use just two fingers to pick any letter on the keyboard.

So, recently, I remembered an article which talked about Tiger Woods, and how he had to re-make his swing from scratch 3 times in order to be the best.

Driven by inspiration, I went on to do a bit of reading, and got to work, ready to demolish my not optimal but already-pretty-fast-by-any-standards typing technique.

And here I am again, being slow and sluggish all over again. Feeling like a newbie once again.

Sacrificing my productivity for a greater good: in fact, it’s like an investment: I pay the price now, but will make it all back and then some when I will (hopefully) type at 120-150 words per minute.

On a side note: cool projects coming up soon. Stay tuned!

Speech recognition

March 28th, 2007

I am writing this with Windows Vista-s built in speech recognition software.
It’s pretty cool although it often guess stuff wrong.

Of course, it took me like twenty times longer to write this post than it would if I had used a keyboard.
But I must say it’s fun to open programs with your voice.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista

I am an ufficial upgrader.

I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate on both my desktop machine and my Macbook Pro.

On the Mac, there were some issues with drivers, which I could quickly overcome thanks to this page.

I must say it’s a nice, smooth OS. There is a lot of eyecandy and you won’t be disappointed by the features either.

The only thing I can complain about is it being a bit too caothic, even for long-time Windows users such as myself. Links to various features (control panel, device manager, etc.) move basing on what you have used recently, and you really can get anywhere from anywhere, although, eventually, you have no clear idea of where everything, in fact, is.

But then again, you can always turn off pretty much anything new and use the old visualizations. Which I am not going to do. Because that’s the best thing about having a new OS on your hands: exploring.

On a side note, PlentyOfVids.com is still going strong, with 2000 unique users and around 7500 pageviews per day and 250 registered users (and counting).

Leave me a comment with your thoughts on Vista, you splendid thing.
