Windows Vista

Windows Vista

I am an ufficial upgrader.

I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate on both my desktop machine and my Macbook Pro.

On the Mac, there were some issues with drivers, which I could quickly overcome thanks to this page.

I must say it’s a nice, smooth OS. There is a lot of eyecandy and you won’t be disappointed by the features either.

The only thing I can complain about is it being a bit too caothic, even for long-time Windows users such as myself. Links to various features (control panel, device manager, etc.) move basing on what you have used recently, and you really can get anywhere from anywhere, although, eventually, you have no clear idea of where everything, in fact, is.

But then again, you can always turn off pretty much anything new and use the old visualizations. Which I am not going to do. Because that’s the best thing about having a new OS on your hands: exploring.

On a side note, PlentyOfVids.com is still going strong, with 2000 unique users and around 7500 pageviews per day and 250 registered users (and counting).

Leave me a comment with your thoughts on Vista, you splendid thing.

Note to Self

Slow e-mails from password retrieval services suck big time.

I’m a mice freak (and yes, I am talking about computers)

March 7th, 2007

Logitech G7

Discard all the doubts you are having on wether it is correct to still use the plural “mice” when referring to more than one computer mouse and read on.

Every 4-5 months, I feel the irresistible urge to buy a new mouse.

I’ve got more mice than I’ll ever need. Hell, I have more mice than computers (and I have A LOT of computers).

I don’t know what drives me so crazy about them. I guess it’s the eternal struggle for the perfect performance and comfort.
And it seemed like I had found the holy grail when I got my Logitech G7 mouse. Brilliant mouse, let me tell you.
If only it wasn’t for the fact that a few months later I also purchased the Z-5450 Wireless speaker 5.1 system, which works at the same frequency as the G7 and completely killed its usability: with the speakers turned on it jumps and stutters like if Mohammed Ali were using it.

I’m back to the MX1000.

So now, moral of the story, it’s that time of the year again. I am looking to buy a mouse. There is no way I could ever justify such a purchase, but I want one.

Maybe the G5 (pretty much the corded version of the G7) may be my next victim..

And I am looking for a good name.

I want to stop thinking about it and just call this new site something stupid..

What would be stupid enough? Any suggestion is more than welcome!

The Burning Crusade; or how to waste a lifetime

February 13th, 2007

The Burning Crusade

I am really tempted to try the new World of Warcraft expansion.

I heard a lot of people say it is remarkable.

But the truth is, if I get it, I’m going to be spiraling down into deep unproductivity. Although, I must say, I haven’t been very productive either without the game, so that probably would serve me well, if taken in moderation, to relax a bit during my pauses..

It’s strange: I seem to grow uninterested with pretty much everything these days. Got myself a Wii, played it quite a bit and now it’s been like 2 weeks since I last touched it.

Oh well, I’ll give TBC a shot, anyway..
I will play on Burning Legion EU. If you’re there, shoot a /w to Archaic. See you on the other side!

I look like everyone you know

February 2nd, 2007

I’ve always thought that Asimov looked a lot like my grandfather (who looks a lot like me). So, after the previous post, I started messing with Photoshop and.. I got a bit carried away. The thing is that a lot of people think I look like someone. This is probably the first installment of an egocentric series of posts. Comment with suggestions for future look-a-likes (or just send me a pic)!

Isaac Asimov
Asimov's Heir?

This Asimov one doesn’t look too good, after working with the others, actually..

Fabio Quagliarella
Quagliarella's Brother?

A good italian football player. My friends say I look like him in the b/w picture to the right.

I got told I look like Johnny Depp too a few times in the past (I used to have long hair). Although I think I look nothing like him, I couldn’t miss the chance to impersonate a pirate, virtually the coolest thing on earth.

Cristiano the Pirate YARR!

YARR! Ahoy Mateys!

Diving in a Sea of Beauty

February 2nd, 2007

Whew, what an altisonant title today!

For the passionate readers out there, I give you a little bit of homework:

Isaac Asimov

1 - Read Isaac Asimov’s favorite story of his, “The Last Question”. It will blow your mind away even though it’s relatively short. It will make your day, I promise!

Sir John Lennon
2 - Listen to the song “Don’t let me down” by The Beatles (forgive my excessive capitalization, I can’t help it when I like something. So, take heed, if your name is John and I call you ‘john’, I probably hate you). It’s a very simple and yet beautiful song. You know those parts or riffs on certain songs that just make you smile when you hear them? Well, this song makes me smile from start to finish.

So it’s all for now. You are on the internet and this means the two following things to me: you have the tools to do your homework and you have the time to do your homework. So, go and, when you’re done, leave me a comment expressing your feelings, and telling me if you liked those pearls of the big oyster shell which is the human brain.

P.S. Some may argue that I have obsessed over virtually every Beatles’ song. And I won’t deny it. But that one really is a gem. Don’t be put down by my passion for the fab-four.. Don’t let me down!

“Food” for thought

January 28th, 2007

Some days ago, I was walking back home.

I was very elegantly dressed because I was coming back from a ceremony.

A black guy sitting on a bench offered me the low-rent socks and clothes he had on a big black bag beside him.

I kindly declined and continued walking.

Right after I passed him, I heard him calling: “Hey, excuse me.. Excuse me!”

I took a couple of steps wondering if I should have just kept walking to avoid the embarassment of an insistent request to buy something, or if I should have stopped and have politely said that I didn’t need anything.

I opted for the latter.

When I turned back the guy was right in front of me, with his eyes crushed in an ineffable expression, muttering some words in italian and some words in english. Before he could even articulate one word I knew he was hungry. You could tell from every single move, from every single wrinkle on his face.
That was the first time I was actually seeing him.

I didn’t hesitate a split second; I reached for my wallet, took out 10 euros and gave them to him.
He literally fell on his knees, with eyes in tears, and started repeating loudly in english: “God bless you! God bless you!”.

I patted him on the shoulder, told him to stand up, nodded as to say “you’re welcome”, and left.

Why am I posting this here, you may ask. The reason is that every single day, most of us take for granted so many things (such as food, the roof over our heads, or even the bed we lay on), that we forget how lucky we actually are.
My suggestion (to myself in the first place, and to you, dear readers, secondly) is to be thankful for everything you have.
Start looking at what you have, day to day, from an outsider point of view.
See how many good things there are in your life. And that is as true for material things as it is for relationships and the people around you.
My suggestion, again, is to stop and look around you, whenever you feel the need for something:
you may already have, in your life, everything you need to be happy.
